My ECG Appointment at Mental Health and Well-Being Services

Arriving

  • When I arrive at Mental Health and Well-being Services, I will press the buzzer labelled “Mental Health and Well-being”. I will explain to the reception team that I am here for an appointment, and they will allow me to open the door to come in.
  • Without pressing the buzzer and explaining why I am here, the door will not open. This is for safety purposes.
  • If you need any further assistance to gain access to the building, please contact us before your visit to make arrangements.
  • I am allowed to bring a friend or family member with me to my appointment.

Entering the Building

  • When I open the door, I will walk upstairs and enter the reception. There is also the option for me to use a lift to go upstairs.
  • There is a dental practice on the ground floor, which is separate to Mental Health and Well-being services.
  • There are two toilets available, located directly outside the reception, including one with disabled access.

Reception Area

  • When I enter the reception, I will be given a visitor lanyard by the receptionists for security purposes.
  • There are up to two friendly receptionists who are able to help me with any queries. There is also useful information and resources available on the communication screen behind the reception desk.
  • In the reception area, I will be given a consent form that I am required to fill in before going into my appointment.
  • I can use the water dispenser to get a drink whenever I would like one.

Waiting Area

  • I will remain in the waiting area until a clinician calls me in for my appointment.
  • Appointments are spread out to keep reception quiet.
  • There are plenty of places to sit, spread out throughout the room, and I can sit where I feel most comfortable.
  • There are various accessories that I can use while I wait, including sterilised fidget spinners, wobble cushions and magazines.
  • At my request, lighting can be dimmed and can be temperatures adjusted.

With the Clinician

  • At the time of my appointment, a clinician will call me in and briefly explain the procedure of an ECG.
  • The clinician may be male or female, and I am allowed to take a friend or family member with me to the appointment. There may also be the option of a chaperone if I request one.
  • Curtains will be drawn around me, so I can undress my top half.
  • If necessary, I may be asked to take off my bra, but I will be given a sheet to cover my chest area.
  • To ensure a safe and accurate ECG, I may also be shaved by a clinician, or asked to remove tights or stockings, if necessary.
  • Sticky tabs will temporarily be placed on my skin and wires will be attached to these sticky tabs. This will enable the ECG to be conducted.
  • The clinician will wait for the results to be captured while the curtains are drawn.
